Fresh-Cut Flower Care After Delivery: A Simple Guide
Fresh-cut flowers begin responding to their new environment as soon as they arrive. A little preparation during the first hour can help the stems stay hydrated and look their best while you arrange them.

1. Unpack and inspect the flowers
Remove the flowers from their packaging and check each bunch. Separate any damaged leaves or broken stems from the healthy flowers. If there is a quality issue with your order, take photos of the flowers and packaging and contact Gegesflorist within 48 hours of delivery.
2. Prepare a clean vase or bucket
Use a clean container that has been washed with soap and water. Fill it with cool, fresh water. A clean container helps reduce bacteria that can shorten the useful life of cut flowers.
3. Remove leaves below the waterline
Strip away any foliage that would sit below the waterline. Leaves left in the water can decay and create a less healthy environment for the stems.
4. Re-cut each stem
Using clean, sharp floral shears or scissors, remove about one inch from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. Cutting at an angle creates more surface area for water uptake. Re-cut stems every two to three days or whenever you change the water.
5. Change the water regularly
Change the water every one to two days. Rinse the vase, trim the stems again, and refill with cool, fresh water. If flower food is included with your order, follow the package directions.
6. Keep flowers cool and away from ripening fruit
Place arrangements in a cool location away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and drafts. Ripening fruit can release ethylene gas, so it is generally best to keep fruit away from cut flowers.
7. Handle different varieties carefully
Flower varieties vary in stem strength, bloom size, and water needs. Follow any variety-specific care instructions included on the product page or with your order. When arranging several types together, give larger or heavier blooms enough space so they are not crushed.
